Case dismissed against Cop charged for stealing gun, ammo

Twenty-two-year-old Kevon Johnson of Lot 16 Public Road, Hague, West Coast Demerara (WCD), had his case dismissed on Wednesday after he appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Johnson was accused in August 2017 of stealing a 9mm pistol valued $375,000 and 10 live rounds of ammunition; property of the Guyana Police Force while he was stationed at the Tactical Service Unit (TSU), Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
At the time Johnson was a serving member of the Guyana Police Force for three years.
After the accusations were made against him, he was placed under close arrest and it was only on October 5, 2017, that he was placed on open arrest and told to make an appearance in court.
Facts presented by the Prosecutor stated that on the day in question, ranks acting on information went to Den Amstel, ECD, where they made contact with the defendant who was under a shed gambling with four friends. The court heard that a physical search was conducted on the defendant and the gun and ammunition were found in his pants crotch.
The Prosecutor told the court that after the defendant was arrested, he admitted that he found the gun along with the ammunition in a cupboard when he was taking out a pair of boots.
Johnson was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 by presiding Magistrate Latchman.
