Wakenaam businessman’s murder

An Alberttown, Georgetown resident was on Wednesday morning arrested and is being interrogated for the murder of Wakenaam businessman, Mahendra Persaud who was gunned down on Alexander Street, Bourda on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old suspect was arrested at about 03:50h by Police ranks. A Police source stated that the man is a known character to the Police and was seen in the CCTV footage of the shooting incident after it was reviewed by investigators.
Guyana Times understands that the Police uplifted and reviewed several pieces of surveillance footage from nearby businesses in the area where the incident took place. With the arrest of Alexander, the Police are on the hunt for one other man suspected to be the shooter.
The 26-year-old businessman was shot about three times on Tuesday by a lone gunman who attacked him seconds after he exited a motorcar to transact business at a wholesale store. He reportedly collapsed and was run over by a heavily tinted motorcar.
A man, who was seen changing the licence plates of the vehicle after the incident was arrested. He is said to be assisting with investigations.
It was reported that after the young businessman was shot, licensed firearm holders who witnessed the incident discharged several rounds in the direction of the gunman who managed to escape on a motorcycle ridden by an accomplice.
The injured businessman was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The gunman was not successful in relieving the Persaud of the bag containing the money he was carrying.
It was during him resisting the gunman that he was shot to the neck and stomach. The now dead man was described as friendly, non-confrontational, funny and helpful. He only recently got married.
