The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) will play its part in the celebration of Guyana’s 60th Independence anniversary with the staging of the Independence Day Chess960 Tournament on May 26 at the Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre.
The one-day tournament, which forms part of the country’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, is expected to attract some of Guyana’s leading chess players as well as emerging talents for the fast-paced competition. Games are scheduled to begin from 09:00h using a rapid format with a time control of 15 minutes plus a five-second increment per move.

According to details released by the federation, competitors will battle for more than GY$140,000 in prize money and trophies. The tournament champion will pocket GY$50,000 along with a trophy, while the runner-up is set to receive GY$30,000 and a trophy. Third- to fifth-place finishers will earn GY$20,000, GY$15,000 and GY$10,000, respectively, in addition to trophies. Special prizes will also be awarded for the Best Female and Best Junior competitors, with both categories carrying prizes of GY$10,000 and trophies.
Registration for the tournament will be done exclusively online, with fees set at GY$1500 for GCF members and GY$3000 for non-members. Payments are to be made via MMG.
The tournament will be contested in the Chess960 format, also known as Fischer Random Chess, where the starting positions of pieces on the back rank are randomised. The variation is designed to place greater emphasis on creativity and out-of-the-box thinking rather than memorised opening theory.
The event is being supported by Trophy Stall, which has sponsored the prizes, while the venue is being provided compliments of Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre.
