Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) has continued its push to strengthen grassroots basketball development after successfully hosting an Introduction to Basketball Coaching Workshop on Tuesday, May 19, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
The workshop was organised in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, with sponsorship support from G-Boats Inc. It brought together teachers, coaches and basketball stakeholders from several regions across Guyana as part of efforts to improve coaching standards and build capacity at the school level.
According to YBG, the initiative forms part of its wider commitment to strengthening developmental structures within schools and communities while equipping educators with practical tools to positively influence young athletes through sport.

The programme featured presentations and practical sessions from Coach Daniel LaFont of Louisiana, Coach Willon Cameron of President’s College, and Manoj Yadav of the Georgetown International Academy. Participants were introduced to fundamental coaching principles, basketball philosophy, athlete preparation, team warm-ups and strategies for building successful school basketball programmes.
The sessions also placed strong emphasis on discipline, fundamentals and development-focused coaching at the youth and school levels.
Special remarks were delivered by Dacia Cummings, a representative of the Unit of Allied Arts within the Ministry of Education, who highlighted the role of sport and structured youth development within the education system. She also encouraged teachers and coaches to use basketball as a platform for positive student engagement and holistic development.
YBG expressed gratitude to the participating teachers, coaches, facilitators, volunteers and partners who contributed to the success of the workshop while also extending special appreciation to G-Boats Inc. for its sponsorship and continued support of youth basketball development in Guyana.
The organisation noted that the workshop aligns with its philosophy of “Development Before Winning” and its mission of using basketball as a tool for leadership, discipline, education and opportunity.
YBG further stated that it intends to continue expanding similar training and capacity-building programmes across Guyana as part of its long-term vision for the sustainable growth of school basketball nationwide.
