Chief Magistrate leads delegation to Lusignan Prison

A high-level delegation from the Magistracy on Friday visited the Lusignan Prison to gain first-hand insight into the prison environment and to understand the operational and administrative challenges faced by the Guyana Prison Service (GPS).
The delegation included Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman, along with the newly appointed Magistrates Ocelisa Marks, Nikkisha Logan, Jimelle Joseph, Shareefah Parks, Taneisha Saygon, and Caressa Henry.
Court Administrator Monique Ifill, Drug Treatment and Mental Health Court Manager Dion Chase, Administrative Officer for the Judicial Service Commission Julianna Hollingsworth and Assistant Protocol and Communication Officer Bhanmattie Ramdial were also part of the delegation.

During the visit, the team was welcomed by the Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, who stressed the importance of the collaboration. They were also briefed on the service’s transformational journey.
He further indicated that the system focuses on a correctional approach emphasising rehabilitation, reintegration, and restoring human dignity.
Meanwhile, the Chief Magistrate stated that the magistracy remains dedicated to its collaborative efforts with the GPS.
The delegation received a detailed tour of the facility, including the construction of the new administrative building, virtual courtrooms, a kitchen, a medical centre, a trade shop, housing for prisoners, an intake processing area, and the Command Centre.
