Guyana faces crucial final group stage tests in 3×3 at Commonwealth Games

Guyana’s men’s 3×3 basketball team will wrap up its Commonwealth Games group stage campaign on Sunday with two pivotal encounters against Nigeria and 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallists Australia in Glasgow, Scotland.
With a place in the medal rounds still within reach, Guyana must finish among the top three teams in their group to advance to the knockout stage. Failing that, they will continue their campaign in the tournament’s classification rounds.

The quartet of Captain Travis Belgrave, Anish Ramlall, Kevin Mickle, and Christian Hinckson has experienced a rollercoaster debut at the Games, producing determined performances despite facing some of the competition’s strongest teams.
Guyana opened its historic campaign with a spirited display against hosts Scotland, controlling much of the contest before eventually going down 21-14.
The defeat was followed by a difficult outing against New Zealand, who showcased their class in a commanding 21-3 victory.
However, the Guyanese responded in impressive fashion in their third group match, creating history with the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games victory in 3×3 basketball.

Captain Travis Belgrave delivered the decisive moment, knocking down the game-winning basket as Guyana defeated the Cayman Islands 22-17 to reignite its hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.
That landmark win has given the team renewed confidence heading into Sunday’s decisive fixtures, where they will be aiming to upset Nigeria and Australia to secure a coveted place in the medal rounds.
