Shepherd unleashes fury as Warriors chase down 205 in GSL thriller

Match Four of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) featured the Desert Vipers against home side and defending champions, the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW). After winning the toss, the Warriors elected to field first. Off-spinner Mohammed Nabi gave the hosts the ideal start by dismissing Zachary Carter for just six runs.
GAW continued to apply pressure during the powerplay as Romario Shepherd removed the dangerous Andries Gous, reducing the Vipers to 36 for two after 4.2 overs. Captain Shadab Khan was then run out shortly after the powerplay, leaving the visitors at 72 for three at the halfway stage of the innings. Barbadian all-rounder Kyle Mayers injected life into the innings with a typically explosive knock, including taking 22 runs from Gudakesh Motie’s 11th over.

The left-hander’s entertaining stay ended when Imran Tahir bowled him for a rapid 35 from just 18 deliveries, an innings featuring three fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 194.44. The Vipers maintained the momentum through Bevon Jacobs and Rilee Rossouw, whose aggressive partnership kept the scoreboard ticking. Tahir struck again to break the 45-run stand when Jacobs was caught at long-off for a brisk 30 from 17 balls, leaving the Vipers on 148 for five after 16 overs.
Rossouw went on to complete a well-crafted half-century and anchored the innings, while Vriitya Aravind provided a late flourish with an explosive cameo. Rossouw’s excellent knock ended in the final over when he was caught at deep midwicket for 61 from 48 balls, an innings that included five fours and one six. Nathan Smith finished the innings in style with a four and a six, while Aravind remained unbeaten on 28 from just 11 deliveries, striking six boundaries.
It was a difficult outing for Gudakesh Motie, who finished with figures of one for 51 from his four overs at an economy rate of 12.75. After their allotted 20 overs, the Desert Vipers posted a daunting 205 for six, setting GAW a challenging target of 206 for victory.

GAW began their chase in explosive fashion, taking the attack to the Desert Vipers’ bowlers from the outset. The highlight of the early assault came in the third over when Kyle Mayers was hammered for 32 runs, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz smashing two sixes and Quentin Sampson adding three more.
Gurbaz’s whirlwind innings eventually ended when he was caught at deep backward point for a blistering 31 from just 15 deliveries, leaving the Warriors on 55 for one. Sampson continued the aggressive approach but was dismissed after chopping Khary Pierre onto his stumps for a rapid 35 from 16 balls, an innings that featured four fours and three sixes.
Pierre struck again with the very next delivery, having Shimron Hetmyer clean bowled for a golden duck to put the Warriors under sudden pressure.
Despite the blistering start, the defending champions closed the powerplay on 71 for three, with the momentum shifting in favour of the Desert Vipers following Pierre’s double strike.
The Warriors’ troubles continued as their hero from the previous match, Rovman Powell, fell cheaply, allowing Desert Vipers Captain Shadab Khan to make his mark with the ball. Young leg-spinner Vitel Lawes then made an immediate impact, trapping Mohammed Haris LBW with his very first delivery as the Warriors slipped to 90 for five after 9.1 overs heading into the drinks break.
When play resumed, Shadab Khan struck twice in quick succession to further derail the defending champions’ chase. Gudakesh Motie, who made five, was dismissed before debutant Jonathan Van Lange was removed for a first-ball duck, leaving the Warriors reeling at 95 for seven.
With the innings in danger of collapsing, Romario Shepherd walked to the crease and began to counterattack, working with the experienced Mohammed Nabi to rebuild hope for the home side. The pair showed intent and started to find the boundaries as the Warriors looked to keep their chase alive. With six overs remaining, GAW required 69 more runs for victory, setting up a tense finish at the Providence Stadium. Romario Shepherd’s explosive counterattack continued as he shifted the momentum firmly back in favour of the home side.
The powerful all-rounder launched an assault in the 16th over, smashing 21 runs to put GAW firmly in the driving seat. The onslaught continued in the following over when Shepherd brought up the fastest 50 in ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League history, breaking the previous record held by Farhan Yousaf (off 21 balls).
However, with the Warriors needing just 20 runs from 18 deliveries, Desert Vipers were handed a lifeline when young leg-spinner Vitel Lawes ended Shepherd’s remarkable innings.
Shepherd departed for 52 from 21 balls, an innings featuring two fours and six sixes at an incredible strike rate of 247.61. With seven runs required from the final over, the experienced duo of Mohammed Nabi and Dwaine Pretorius held their nerve under pressure.
Nabi played the anchor role with a composed 40 from 29 balls, while Pretorius added a valuable 17 from nine deliveries to guide the Warriors home. The defending champions successfully chased down the target, reaching 206 for eight in 19.3 overs to secure a thrilling two-wicket victory.
The tournament continues today with two matches; first the Perth Scorchers XI take on San Francisco Unicorns, while the night game will see GAW back in action as they take on the in-form Lahore Qualanders at 19:00h.
