Coastal residents cautioned of flooding from storm surges

The Public Infrastructure Ministry has issued a notice to the public, sending advice to take precautionary measures during the current high tide period, since selected areas will be susceptible to flooding.
The high tide period will last until September 4, 2019. Throughout this time, it is predicted that the tides will rise above normal levels in areas such as the Pomeroon River banks, Sans Souci to Sarah on Wakenaam Island; Canefield/Amsterdam, Endeavour/Blenheim and Cane Garden on Leguan Island; Windsor Forest to De Willem on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD); and Parika Market area to Salem and Sparta on the East Bank of Essequibo. A section of Fairfield/Danzigt in Mahaicony; Helena in Mahaica and Wellington Park/Tarlogie on the Corentyne are also under threat. Meanwhile, Water Street in Georgetown will see similar outcomes. The Ministry has predicted the highest tides on Saturday, August 31, at 04:15h and Sunday, September 1, at 05:03h at a height of 3.55 metres.
Mariners, especially those who operate fishing and large vessels, are also advised to take precautions. Visiting the beach during this time for a recreational period is not advised.
