Local star boxer Dexter “The Cobra” Gonzales said he will be using the upcoming “Sangre Malo” fight card billed for January 20 as preparation for his upcoming Commonwealth title fight against Meacher Major in the Bahamas.
“The Cobra” as he’s commonly called on the local scene, told Guyana Times Sport on Thursday following the event’s official launch, that while his focus and attention was on his “Sangre Malo” opponent; Venezuelan Filipe Lares; he was keeping his thoughts on the title fight set for later this year.
Gonzales said that his training for the upcoming fights were coming along nicely, adding that he’s upping his game by training with fellow Guyanese and teammate for the upcoming card; current Caribbean Lightweight champion Dexter “The Kid” Marques.
“To achieve a title is every boxer’s dream so we have to work towards it because nothing in life comes easy so you have to keep pushing yourself to that level. Coming into this fight, it will be preparation to move onto the commonwealth title shot in the Bahamas. I’m working hard, mostly thinking about this fight that I have,” Declared Gonzales.
Alongside Marques, who will also be using his Sangre Malo main event encounter to prepare for his title fight in March versus UK’s Jay Harris, is fellow Guyanese boxing star Elton Dharry, who faces Jesus Vargas while “Cobra”, Guyana’s current Lightweight champion will tackle Lares, capping off the three main fights on the card.
“My training schedule is coming pretty well; I’m working with Dexter as well as putting in some gym work. But my main goal is to get to the level that I want to get to and that’s the commonwealth title shot,” he said.
Known as a power-hitter, Gonzales said that he has been working hard on increasing his strength as the fights draw near. “My power is coming along nice because the perpetrations that I do to get to get there is very hard but my coach carries me through the preparations so I’m getting to that level,” said the pugilist.
With the entirety of the card based around Guyana defending its pride against the Venezuelans, the fighter declared that it was indeed great to be representing his country while showing the world that Guyana still has a place on the international boxing map.
“Well to me it’s very important for us who will be representing Guyana, to make our country better and make people look into boxing just as they would look into cricket and other sports. I think we will put up a good fight against them come January 20,” he ended.
