Colts outplay Retrieve Raiders to win Road to Mecca III
The Colts produced a stunning come-from-behind performance to defeat the Retrieve Raiders 75-55 in the final of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Road to Mecca Championship on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The final had to be replayed after controversial calls by the referees saw a walkout at the initial game. Saturday’s final was officiated over by three International Basketball Federation (FIBA) officials, two of whom were from Barbados.
At half time, the Colts were trailing 32-29, but some exceptional teamwork saw them net an important 21 points to change the score in their favour to 50-37, heading into the final quarter.
The Georgetown unit upped their defensive tactics, while creating a series of offensive plays, which effectively shut the Linden side out of the contest.
Shelroy Thomas led the way for the Colts with a game-high 25 points, while Kurt English and Shane Webster netted 12 and 11 points apiece. Assisting with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds was Stanton Rose.
For the losing team, Jason Alonzo topscored with 11 points, while Keon Cameron, Dwayne Roberts and Neil Marks chipped in with 10, nine and eight points respectively.
The emphatic win saw the Colts pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the runners-up received $250,000 and a trophy as well.
All the team and individual presentations will occur on April 30.
