The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) and former athletes based in North America will team up to host a Day of Athletics on May 22 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee.
The organising committee explained that a 5km, a 10km and track-and-field events will be staged four days prior to Independence Day.
The GNS Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, and the GDF Ground will be hives of activity on the day. Lots of cash prizes and trophies will be up for grabs.
The 5km race will be for athletes aged 14-16 and the 10km will be open to all ages.
The events are scheduled to start at 06:00h at the Sports Complex and end at the same venue; the organisers have not named an official route as yet.
Five hours after the 06:00h start, the youth, junior and senior track and field athletes will swing into action at the GDF Ground.
They will compete in the 4x100m and the 4x400m relay races along with the 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m and long jump events; 60m and 80m events will also be contested by athletes 12 and under.
While the top three finishers in the Under-16 and Under-20 events will take home bicycles, the top five seniors will pocket $40,000, $30,000, $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.
The top three Master’s male and female finishers will be rewarded with cash prizes of $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.
