Couchman retains National Junior Chess Championship title

Defending champion Kyle Couchman successfully retained the National Junior Chess Championship title after drawing with Sachin Pitamber in the decisive ninth and final round on Saturday morning at Olympic House, Liliendaal.
The Ennermech-sponsored championship concluded with Couchman finishing unbeaten on 8.5 points from nine rounds, half a point ahead of Pitamber, who placed second on eight points. Aditi Joshi secured third with 6.5 points after defeating Aiden Tinnie in the final round.
Knowing that a draw would be enough to secure the title, Couchman and Pitamber shared the point on board one in the tournament’s marquee encounter. The result ensured the defending champion remained atop the standings after leading for much of the competition.

Elsewhere in the final round, Alexander Zhang defeated Javier Davenand to finish fourth overall on 5.5 points, while Joshi’s victory over Tinnie cemented her place on the podium. Kataleya Sam received a walkover against Matthew Singh, and Jeremy Cole and Nicholas Zhang drew their encounter.
Nicholas Zhang finished fifth with four points, followed by Sam on 3.5 points. Singh and Cole each ended on three points, while Tinnie and Davenand completed the standings with 1.5 points apiece.
The championship featured nine rounds of competition from July 13 to 18, with the country’s leading junior players battling across six days at Olympic House. Throughout the event, Couchman consistently produced strong performances to remain unbeaten and successfully defend the national title.
