Cricket and golf will come together on Sunday, July 5, when the ER Small Engines Rookie Golf Tournament tees off at the Westside Golf Course in Vreed-en-Hoop.
The tournament will bring together cricketers and first-time golfers for a day of competition, with GY$100,000 in prizes up for grabs. The event is designed specifically for beginners, with teams of three competing for top honours.
Several players associated with cricket teams, including Brian Headley’s Mystic Marvels, are expected to take part. Well-known cricket personalities such as Ravindra Kissoon, former Guyana and West Indies player Rajendra Chandrika, prolific tapeball run-scorer Jonte Thomas, Jermaine Dewsbury of Transport Cricket Club, N L&B Fuel Pump Repairs and others will trade their cricket bats for golf clubs on the day.
Organisers say the tournament is aimed at creating a bridge between Guyana’s oldest sport, cricket, and one of the country’s fastest-growing sports, golf.
The Westside Golf Course, in partnership with the Guyana Golf Association, has been working to introduce golf to more players across Guyana. Located just off the Schoonord Highway at the Crane Roundabout, Westside is Guyana’s only public golf course and features a lighted driving range and a restaurant, which is open daily from 07:00h.
Registration is open to all beginner golfers. Interested players can contact Dave at ER Small Engines on 647-0016.
Golf clubs and balls will be provided free of charge, while complimentary practice sessions will also be available for registered participants.
The event is sponsored by Comfort Sleep, Toolsie Persaud Ltd, Madewini Gardens Eco Resort, Excel Guyana Inc, Puran Bros, Party Castle, Rommel’s Wholesale Beverages, Regal Stationery and Kumar Auto Spares.
