“Criteria must be established” – President Ali on naming stadiums

President Dr Irfaan Ali says criteria must be established before names can be attached to national stadiums

With the recent commissioning of another international-standard cricket stadium in Guyana – the Anna Regina National Stadium, a common conversation has once again surfaced, surrounding the naming of those venues.
The Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) is another such venue that has seen numerous calls since its commissioning in 2007, to be named after Guyanese legends of the game.
This time around, the question was posed to President Dr Irfaan Ali on Friday last at the commissioning of the Essequibo Coast venue, and in response, the Head of State gave some insight on how the Government of Guyana and by extension, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, intends to navigate the process.
“Oh definitely, I believe that we must celebrate our legends and very soon we’re going to get there. I know the Minister of Sport is going through a process,” President Ali shared.
As such, he went on to divulge the likely process that will be undertaken.
The Head of State explained, “We have to identify – there’re a lot of persons who contributed – we have to have the criteria clearly laid out as to what level you contribute and then we’ll move from there.”
