Home Sports Crum-Ewing keen on making a name for himself
For Odel Crum-Ewing, life has never been easy, but with his ‘no surrender no retreat’ mentality, he has pushed himself to higher heights despite the challenges he has faced in his journey to becoming one of Guyana’s best bodybuilders.
Growing up in the area of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, Crum-Ewing vividly remembers when he was first introduced to the gym around the age of five. He said he remembers like yesterday going to the Essequibo boxing gym and curling his first weight. At a tender age, he recalled, his uncle Marvis Williams, who competed in many powerlifting competitions in Guyana, was his biggest idol, as he had introduced him to the sport.
Growing in his teen years, he grew fonder of bodybuilding, and always had a keen eye on Mr Universe himself, Hugh Ross, as he vowed to make his name known in the bodybuilding realm of Guyana.
As time progressed he joined Total Fitness Gym, which he would eventually represent in the 2017 Novice Championships. In an exclusive with <<Guyana Times Sport>>, Crum Ewing said, ‘For me, life as a bodybuilder is challenging. Due to my body type, I have a very high metabolism, so I can eat whatever I like, but it is harder for me to put on mass, therefore the way forward is putting in the work to see results”.
Thus he proved the critics wrong and competed in the 2017 Novice Championships, securing first place in the under 165 category, which gave him the opportunity to compete in the Senior category of the bodybuilding championship.
The rule states that when you win a category, all the winners then compete against each other for the overall title, and there he got second. But it was not over for him, as he further went on that night to compete in the Men’s Physique and under 175 categories in which he placed 5th and 2nd respectfully. With all the success he has had, Crum-Ewing said, “For me the sky is the limit, and one day I would like to earn a pro card and compete in the Olympia, my focus right now will be on winning my first Mr. Guyana title, then I want to progress and compete internationally”.
In closing, he said, “I would like to thank God firstly for giving me the health and strength to participate in the sport. I would like to thank the owner and members of Total Fitness Gym for their continuous support.
“I would like to thank my immediate family for support in every little venture and the way they support me, my University gym buddies and Mr. Terry Anderson”. (Timothy Jaikarran)
