CWI U19 Rising Stars: Guyana men get 1st win; Leeward women defeat Guyana

The Guyana Under-19 women’s team lost for the second time in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Women’s Under-19 Championship, this time in a rain-affected match against Leeward Islands at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex in Trinidad and Tobago. On the other hand, their male counterparts got the better of same opposition over in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Due to rain, the match was reduced to 35 overs per side. Guyana Under-19s Women won the toss and elected to bat first. Cianna Barkoye top scored as she was not out on a score of 24 off 63 balls. Barkoye was the only batter that reached double figures as her team was dismantled and could only muster a mere 74 runs in 23.2 overs. Sainavi Kambalapalli was the chief destroyer as she picked up figures of 4 for 22 in 7 overs. Courtney Browne also had a significant impact, as she had figures of 3 for 11.
Leeward Islands in reply made light work of the chase as they reached 77 for 3 in just 8.4 overs. Kambalapalli once had her prints on the game, as she top-scored with 37 off 21 balls. Her innings included 8 glorious boundaries. Captain Jahzara Claxton provided support with a score of 21.
Guyana Under 19 Women’s next game is scheduled to be against Trinidad and Tobago Under 19 at the National Cricket Center on July 17th.
In the male game, Guyana Under 19 went into battle against Leeward Island Under 19. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Leeward Islands were bowled out for 233 in 47.2 overs. Several of the Leeward Island players got starts but failed to carry on. De-Antre Drew top scored with 42, while opening batsman Devanand Singh got a score of 41. Golcharran Chulai, with figures of 3 for 39, and Romario Ramdehol, with figures of 3 for 22, led Guyana in the bowling department.
Guyana chased down their target score in 49.1 overs, with Rampersaud Ramnauth, 48, scoring the most runs. Afraz Ali Budhoo, 34, and captain Jothanan Van Lange, 45, were also crucial innings. Guyana won by two wickets after reaching 234 for eight to secure their first victory of this years tournament.
