Cyclist killed in Enmore accident

A 29-year-old pedal cyclist was killed in an accident along the Enmore Access Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The accident occurred at about 18:00h on Monday, and involved motorcar PYY 9583, driven by a 27-year-old.
Police said the 27-year-old driver alleges that he was proceeding east along the northern side of the road in the motorcar while the pedal cyclist, who has been identified as Hanchan Basdeo, was proceeding west along the northern side of the road.

The driver claimed that despite twice flashing his vehicle lights as well as using his horn, his vehicle and the cycle collided.
As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist fell onto the road surface and received injuries about his body.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition by the driver of the said vehicle, and was taken to the Nabaclis Health Centre, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty, who treated him and referred him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
When he arrived at that medical facility, he was further examined and admitted as a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) suffering from injuries to the body.
He succumbed at the hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Breathalyzer tests were conducted on the car driver, but no trace of alcohol was found in his system.
The vehicle and bicycle have been lodged to be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.
The driver is in custody assisting with the investigation. (G9)
