Dataram’s wife busted with contraband at Mazaruni Prison

Anjanie Boodnarine, the reputed wife of Barry Dataram, is once again in hot water after she attempted to smuggle a prohibited item into the Mazaruni Prison, where Dataram is severing time for cocaine trafficking.

Based on reports received, the woman was attempting to smuggle cigarettes among a quantity of chocolates into the penitentiary on Friday. The discovery was made by prison officials during a mandatory check on the contents that were being

taken into the prison.

A probe has been started, but officials at the prison confirmed that the Police were called in to assist. The chocolates were also confiscated, and will be checked to determine if they are laced with any illegal substance.

In 2016, Boodnarine was charged with possession of ammunition after one hundred and eighty .223 rounds of live ammunition were found in her Diamond, East Bank Demerara home. She was also charged for having 129.23kg of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.

However, Boodnarine and Dataram absconded to Suriname mere days before the trial Magistrate made her ruling in the drug possession case. In their absence, Dataram was sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment and fined $164,268,000.

The couple, however, was arrested and extradited to Guyana, where they were slapped with forgery related charges. Dataram was initially sentenced to five years

for cocaine possession, and an additional 48 months for forgery.

Subsequently, the court found Dataram guilty of possession of ammunition and he was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $60,000.

Meanwhile, sources told Guyana Times that Boodnarine remains in custody and is expected to be charged in the new week.
