Den Amstel, Achievers book semi-final spot

An evening of good football excitement was seen on Wednesday as home side Den Amstel and Young Achievers were through to the semi-finals of the Stag/West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Derrick Josiah 3rd knockout Football tournament.

Den Amstel thrashed Stewartville 5-0 with goals from Delon Lanferman who opened the score sheet in the 6th minute. Lanferman added his second two minutes later and then saw Kester Jacobs (12th minute) put the score 3-0 at half time.

On resumption, a double by Gideon Payne (60th and 62nd) ended the misery for the opposition.

The next match saw Eagles United receiving an upset with only themselves to be blamed as the lost 2-3 in a close encounter against Young Achievers.

Marius Williams penned his name on the score sheet in the 60th minute giving the Sara Lodge based side the lead after a goalless first half.

It would be just twenty minutes later that the score would be leveled via Achievers’ Lloyd Prince. With confidence the Eagles replied when Chris Macey got the ball past the Achievers goalkeeper to score in the 85th minute taking the score 2-1.

Seconds later Prince leveled the scores and as pressure mounted the Eagles fell to an own goal in the 86th minute.

Tonight at the same venue two more clubs would be looking to secure their places in the semi-finals as Pouderoyen FC will face Golden Warriors at 18:00 hrs and the feature match will see Uitvlugt coming up against Wales United FC.

Head coach of Pouderoyen FC, Travis Bess made mentioned of his team coming into this tournament as a fit and ready unit.

He noted that his team’s main focus is to win against golden Warriors, the will move their attention forward to their next opponent. His first team is expected to come from Sherwin Bernard, Kevin Humphrey, Alex Softliegh, Sebastian Edwards, Donford Williams, Morgan Denny, Darrell Abrams, Denzil Boyce and Quessey Alleyne.

Wales United coach\player Alexander Clarke said that come tonight his side will be facing a very strong team in the tournament but will not let up on any surprises since he has the confidence in his players to create an upset once given the opportunity.

With the likes of kelvin Roberts, Lawrence Phillips, onacy Bernard, Dorwayne paul, Tevin John, Rupert Harpresaud and Shaquille Dos Santos the South West Demerara team is out to give an account of themselves.

The semi-finals will be played on Sunday at the aforementioned venue.
