Indian cultural heritage came to life at Nrityageet 38

Concluding the celebrations of the 179th anniversary of Indian Arrival to Guyana this year was the annual Indian cultural spectacular, titled Nrityageet.
The National Cultural Centre came to life on Saturday and Sunday last as the Nadira and Indranie Shah Dance Troupe staged their yearly tribute to arrival and contributions of the Indian ancestors who came as indentured immigrants.
Through dance, music, poetry and fashion, spirited performers took to the stage over the weekend to celebrate the arrival and presence of East Indians in Guyana while showcasing their talents and continuing a tradition that has been relished for over three decades.
This year marked the 38th production of Nrityageet which has over the years significantly paid homage to the Indian forefathers who laid the foundation for the development of the multicultural society that exists in Guyana.  The performances reflected the traditions and heritage of those who came from India over a century ago and passed on through plantation society, making its way into 21st Century Guyanese society.
The artistic pieces also accurately highlighted the fusion of culture that took place throughout the generations as a result of the diverse multiethnic society that stands throughout the country.
The event this year presented a unique opportunity for those in attendance to have a connection and understanding their roots, especially with the various religious and traditional performances that were delivered.
It also provided a chance to appreciate the hardship of the indentured labourers and celebrates the strides made by Guyanese to rise above the challenges of the trying days of the past.
Apart from the production, the nine delegates vying for the coveted title of Miss Guyana India Worldwide made a special appearance.
