Ladies golf star Joaan Deo said she’s ready to start off 2018 with a bang today when Trophy Stall and the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) host their first tournament of the year.
The former women’s champ told Guyana Times Sport on Friday that she was happy to see the course in shape months ahead of the usually scheduled time. Deo pointed out that it was good for the local players to be afforded ample match time as 2018 is expected to host more competitions than previous years.
“We would usually start around March or April because of the weather, but I think it’s good that we’re having a jumpstart. The new committee is really trying to push the sport so I think it’s a good start because we have a lot of golfers who are eager to play because we haven’t had any competition really since the Open,” said Deo.
Deo admitted that since last year’s Guyana Cup Open, where she finished second; she has not played any golf but managed a few holes on Thursday when she visited the course.
“Since the Open I have not played Golf and then the course was under water. I was there on Thursday afternoon I chipped for like 45 minutes so I’m going into the tournament with not much practice but I should be good to compete against the rest of golfers.’
Rating the works done by the LGC members who with help from MACORP by virtue of their machinery, transformed a waterlogged Lusignan Course into a course ready for golf at its highest level, in just a week; Deo said she was pleased with the amount of work put in by the team in order to make the greens playable.
From a personal perspective, the female star said playing as early as possible is a great boost for not only her but the rest of golfers who have been rearing to play. She concluded by admitting she was upbeat about the prospects of golf in 2018, especially with the club growing in stature, she believes 2018 will be an incredible breakthrough year for the sport.
