After the official presentation to the Director, Sister Julie Matthews, the staff were more than happy to assist the boys in finding their sizes so they could be off to school in their new shoes and new backpacks. Sister Matthews and 14-year-old Stephan thanked Digicel for its timely donations and encouraged those present to “keep doing good”.

The telecommunications company delivered mobile aids in the form of wheelchairs, backpacks, food items, school supplies and a gas stove to the other beneficiaries.

The Headmistress of Diamond Special Needs School, Wendy Grimmond, indicated their interest in starting a feeding programme for the students and as such, Digicel has willingly donated a new gas stove and a quantity of food items to get the programme started.

Digicel continued on its anniversary quest to put smiles on the faces of special needs students and teachers in Guyana. Its next stop was the New Amsterdam Special Needs School where it commissioned a brand new sick-bay and donated several new kitchen appliances.

The staff had cleaned and gave an existing room in the school a makeover, into the sick-bay.

“We were more than happy to take some time off to come and help where we knew our help was needed. Doing this today was something that all the staff enjoyed and we were happy that we could have spent some time with the students. Experiencing the joy on their faces as they saw the new space and as they hopped on the beds was all the thanks we needed,” Digicel Public Relations Manager Vidya Sanichara said. The team also stopped at the Canaan Children’s Home while in Berbice.

Digicel remains committed to fulfilling its corporate social responsibility, and its focus on charity and special needs remain at the top of the list. Special needs intervention is central to its mandate throughout the Caribbean and Central America and the company is committed to enhancing the welfare of children with special needs across those markets.

For its anniversary celebrations, Digicel will also be gifting 10 lucky Facebook fans with gifts based on its “Name your gift” Facebook promotion where they make a gift request and Digicel will grant their request. In addition, 10 loyal customers who have been on the network from the inception would also receive upgrades to their handsets.

This will be done during a special radio programme this morning at the company’s head office in Barrack Street, Kingston, Georgetown.
