Doctor arrested after Corentyne fatal collision

Forty-two-year-old businessman Ishwarnauth Bisram died after being struck by a car driven by a 79-year-old doctor on the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, Saturday night. Bisram, who police identified as a resident of Belvedere Squatting Area, was struck at about 21:55h by motorcar, PZZ 1906. The doctor, a resident of Whim Village, Corentyne, was subsequently taken into police custody as investigations continued. CCTV footage seen by this publication showed Bisram attempting to cross the roadway when the car approached and struck him. The impact threw Bisram some distance along the roadway. Police, in their preliminary account of the accident, said the car was proceeding east along the northern driving lane of Nigg Public Road when Bisram allegedly walked from south to north across the road and into its path. According to investigators, the driver applied the brakes in an attempt to avoid hitting Bisram, but the front of the vehicle struck him.

Bisram sustained injuries about his body and was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police have confirmed that CCTV cameras were observed in the vicinity and said the footage would be reviewed as part of the investigation. A breathalyser test administered to the doctor returned a reading of 11 micrograms, which police said was below the prescribed legal limit.

“We want justice”
Bisram’s sister, Sandy Bishram, said relatives subsequently returned to the scene as they tried to piece together the final moments of his life. According to her, the family was told that Bisram had crossed the road to purchase food from a stand and had already collected the food when he attempted to cross back over the roadway.
She said the family has also viewed footage of the collision. Sandy said after confirming the accident she travelled to the hospital. She said Bisram’s head was heavily bandaged when she saw him before his body was eventually taken away.
The grieving sister said Bisram was her only brother and described the two as extremely close, having worked together for much of their lives.

“We want justice for our brother because we have one brother, one brother we get, and he’s very close to me because both of us was working together since we were little,” she said. She said the family wants investigators to closely examine all of the available evidence, particularly the CCTV footage. Sandy remembered her brother as a hardworking businessman who had operated a supermarket and chicken business in Canje. While police listed Bisram as a resident of Belvedere Squatting Area, his sister said his home was at Lot 60 Cumberland, East Canje, and that for approximately two months before his death he had been staying on the Corentyne.
Bisram’s body is at Ramoo’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination (PME). The 79-year-old doctor remained in police custody as the investigation continue.
