Duo busted with $6.5M worth of cocaine in car remanded

Devon Simon, 43, of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Housing Scheme, West Ruimveldt, and 35-year-old Winston Hazel of Gibson Street, Tucville, Georgetown, who were nabbed in Guyhoc Park with $6.5 million worth of cocaine, were remanded to prison on Friday.
The men appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them. The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) stated that the men had 5.814 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
They are expected to make their next court appearance on March 17, 2022.
It was reported that CANU ranks on Tuesday last intercepted a motor car with the cocaine hidden inside. At the time, Hazel and Simon were the two lone occupants.

The cocaine, which was contained in five packages, was taken to the CANU Headquarters for testing and when weighed amounted to 5.814kg with a street value of $6.5 million.
Less than two weeks ago, two suspects who were trafficking some $17 million worth of ganja opened fire on CANU ranks during an operation at Number 69 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
The CANU officers had intercepted motor car PKK 4588 during which 129.6lbs of marijuana was found and seized.
However, the two men who were in the vehicle opened fire when confronted by the law enforcement officials. The suspects managed to flee the scene.
CANU said it is suspected that the illegal drug was intended for transhipment to Suriname. It noted too that the substance has a street value of $17,640,000.
