Duo fined $460K for drunk driving, other traffic-related charges

Two men were recently fined a combined $460,000 for driving under the influence of alcohol and other traffic-related offences while traversing the Essequibo Coast Roadway, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

Azim Hassim, 53, a vendor of Lot 29 Palmyra East Berbice, was arrested on Friday, August 7, 2026, along the Cotton Field Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
Hassim was accused of driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. He appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir on Tuesday at Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to the charge.
As such, he was fined $200,000 or, alternatively, six months of imprisonment.
Meanwhile, 52-year-old Elroy Anthony, a security officer of Clerk Street Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a driver’s licence, and breach of insurance.

The offences were committed on Saturday, August 29, 2026, along the La Belle Alliance Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
He also appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir and pleaded guilty to all the charges when they were read to him. He was fined $200,000 for drunk driving, $30,000 for driving without a valid driver’s licence, and $30,000 for the breach of insurance charge.
Failing to pay the fine, he faced six months of imprisonment.
