Defending champions Slingerz Football Club continued their Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League Season Eight campaign with a commanding 4-0 victory over newcomers Camptown FC, while Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC edged Western Tigers 1-0 in Sunday night’s double-header at the National Training Centre (NTC), Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Curtez Kellman opened the scoring for Slingerz in the 38th minute with a header before second-half goals from Yusifu Kargbo and Bryan Wharton sealed the convincing victory.
Kellman’s strike separated the teams at halftime as Camptown, one of the fresh faces in the league this season, kept the defending champions within reach during the opening period.
Slingerz strengthened their position in the 72nd minute when Kargbo doubled the advantage. Wharton then scored twice in quick succession, finding the net in the 83rd and 86th minutes to complete the rout.
In the second match, GDF overcame a red card to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory against Western Tigers.
The contest remained goalless for most of the night before GDF defender Emmanuel Lewis was sent off in the 65th minute, leaving the Army side to continue with 10 players.
Western Tigers were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage, and GDF were eventually awarded a penalty from Mark Jhalu’s foul deep into second-half stoppage time.
Veteran GDF defender and Captain Colin Nelson then converted the spot kick to secure all three points for his team in dramatic fashion.
Meanwhile on Saturday, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) FC came from behind to pull off a close 2-1 victory over Fruta Conquerors FC.
Micaiah DeFreitas gave Fruta Conquerors the lead two minutes into first-half stoppage time, but Nicholas McArthur turned the game around with goals in the 79th and 88th minutes.
The second game that night saw an identical scoreline as Monedderlust FC opened their account in this edition of the league on a winning note.
Royan Rose opened the scoring for Monedderlust in the 28th minute before Johenni Mendoza Gomez equalised for Den Amstel eight minutes later.
Delwin Fraser restored Monedderlust’s advantage in the 48th minute, and his goal ultimately proved to be the match-winner.
The Elite League will continue next weekend at the NTC.
