Essequibo Coast man charged for killing girlfriend’s ex-partner
Twenty-year-old Elroy Matthias, called “Chine Boy”, appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on Friday, charged with the capital offence of murder.
The allegation is that on January 7, 2024 he murdered Ricardo John.
Matthias, a labourer of Supenaam, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison.
The matter has been transferred to the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court and will continue on January 24.
John, called “Cardo”, was chopped to death last Sunday night by his girlfriend’s former partner.
John ,of La Belle Alliance, Region Two, succumbed to his injuries whilst receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Reports are that John was at a shop in the vicinity of Richmond Access Road leading to Lima Sands when, about 23:30h, an altercation ensued between him and a cutlass-wielding Matthias.
The accused reportedly inflicted severe injuries on John’s upper body before fleeing the scene.
The victim was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital in an unconscious state, but was later transferred to the GPHC where he died.
On Monday, January 7 at about 14:00h, John was apprehended.
He has since reportedly confessed to the crime. (G1)
