A 28-year-old resident of Ptolemy Avenue, Dartmouth Village, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) was electrocuted on Monday after allegedly coming into contact with an electrical wire that was supplying current to a chicken coop at the back of the yard. Dead is Kelton Benn. Preliminary investigations revealed that Benn had gone to use an outdoor washroom facility at the back of the yard, and after some time had elapsed and he did not return, a relative went in search of him. He was found lying motionless next to a chicken coop.
Police stated that an electrical wire had been connected from the house to the chicken coop for several months now to supply lighting.
A nine-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl, who were subsequently seen shaking while leaning against the structure, were taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where they were admitted for observation. The injured man was also taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed on the remains of Benn.
Following the incident, Guyana Power and Light Inc was contacted, and the electrical wire was disconnected.
Investigations are ongoing.
