Essequibo Coast traffic offenders fined $360,000

…1 granted $200,000 bail

Four men appeared before the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court this month on a series of traffic-related offences, resulting in fines totalling $360,000, while another defendant was granted bail after pleading not guilty. Abdool Shameer, 33, a labourer of Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, was charged with driving without a licence, breach of insurance and failing to display an identification mark on the rear of the vehicle.
The offences were committed on June 3, at the Anna Regina Access Road, and were laid under the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act and the Motor Insurance Third-Party Risk Act. When he appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir on June 9, Shameer pleaded guilty to all three charges. He was fined $30,000 for driving without a licence, $30,000 for breach of insurance, and $75,000 for failing to display a rear identification mark. In default of payment, he faces three months’ imprisonment on each charge. The fines total $135,000.

In a separate matter, Ravindra Ganpat, 21, an operator of Plot ‘C’, Anna Regina Squatting Area, was charged with driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. The offence occurred on May 25, 2026, along the Reliance Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Ganpat appeared before Magistrate Mohabir on June 9 and pleaded guilty. He was fined $200,000, with a default sentence of six months’ imprisonment.
Meanwhile, Govin Naipaul, 41, a taxi driver of the Richmond Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, was charged with refusing to provide a breath specimen for a breath alcohol test. The offence was allegedly committed on May 26, 2026, along the Anna Regina Public Road. Naipaul appeared before the court on June 12 and pleaded guilty to the charge. He was fined $25,000, with a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment.

On bail: Dameion Anthony Jones

Also appearing before the court was Dameion Anthony Jones, 41, a taxi driver of Church Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD). Jones was charged with driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit following an incident on May 18, 2026, along the Aurora Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
When the matter was heard before Magistrate Mohabir on June 12, Jones pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail in the sum of $200,000, and the matter was adjourned to June 19.
