A fisherman was on Monday sentenced to one year of imprisonment for having a quantity of narcotics in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Edward Ramnauth, 31, of Unity Lancaster, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was arrested on Sunday at Charity Public Road, Essequibo Coast, and appeared before Magistrate Tariq Mohamed at the Charity Magistrate’s Court.
He pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him, and as such, he was sentenced to one year of imprisonment along with a $30,000 fine.
In addition, he was sentenced to two weeks for being in possession of smoking utensils.
Meanwhile, Jason Chandat, 30, of Lima, Essequibo Coast, who was also arrested on Sunday with 1.3 grams of cocaine at Anna Regina, also made his appearance before Magistrate Tariq Mohamed on Tuesday, where the charge was read to him and he pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail in the sum of $60,000 and will make another court appearance in June 2026.
