Essequibo labourer sentenced to 1 year for illegal shotguns, ammo
A 58-year-old man was slapped with a one-year sentence and fined $100,000
for the possession of illegal shotguns and ammunition when he appeared at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court.
Chandra Shankar, also known as “Rooplall” or “Zappa” of Hoff-Van-Aurich Backdam, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam and pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.
The charges detailed that on May 24, 2020, at his home, he had two improvised shotguns along with seven live rounds of ammunition when he was not a holder of a firearm licence.
The court heard that on the day in question, at around 14:00h, ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) swooped down on Shankar’s home and carried out a search during which two improvised shotguns and the ammunition were unearthed.
One empty cartridge and two dismantled weapons were also found.
