Fanning praises Guyana experience as Scorchers end GSL on a high

Perth Scorchers opening batsman Sam Fanning expressed delight after his side signed off the 2026 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) with a victory, while admitting it was a disappointing campaign overall after several narrow defeats.

The Australian franchise defeated the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) by 14 runs in their final group-stage match at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, on Wednesday evening to record their first and only win of the tournament.
Reflecting on the result, Fanning said the victory was a fitting reward for a team that had come close throughout the competition.
“Yeah, really nice for us to get a win in the last game. We have been a bit unlucky this tournament, I think. We’ve been really close in every game and just ended up on the wrong side of it, so it’s just nice for us to come away with a victory but a disappointing campaign, unfortunately,” Fanning said.
Despite finishing the tournament with only one win, the Scorchers were competitive throughout the GSL, with each of their matches going down to the closing stages before they finally broke through in their last outing.
The Perth Scorchers, one of Australia’s most successful and widely supported T20 franchises, were making their debut appearance in the ExxonMobil Guyana GSL.
Fanning also praised the organisation of the event and the hospitality shown in Guyana, saying the experience exceeded the team’s expectations.
“Yeah, we have absolutely loved it. All the teams are in one hotel; that’s really good fun getting to know everyone and seeing a little bit of Guyana. It’s a beautiful place, and playing at this ground tonight, we played the Warriors, the home team, and the crowd was unreal, so it was great playing in front of them, and hopefully it continues for several years to come,” he added.
His comments highlighted the unique atmosphere created by the tournament, where teams from different cricketing nations shared accommodations, fostering camaraderie off the field while competing fiercely on it.
The strong crowd support at the Guyana National Stadium also left a lasting impression on the Australian visitors, particularly in their clash against the defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors.
