Farmer found dead with 2 wounds; husband in custody

Police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old farmer of Philippai Village, Upper Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), whose body was discovered near a stream on Friday night.
Dead is Marinda Ernest. According to initial investigations, Ernest and her 23-year-old reputed husband had earlier joined about 40 villagers in a self-help exercise at a farm located approximately one hour’s walk from their residence. The exercise ended around 16:00h, after which the couple began making their way home.
The reputed husband told investigators that while travelling along the main trail, he briefly entered the bushes. Upon returning to the trail, he claimed that he could not locate Ernest.
He reportedly continued home but did not find her there. The man then returned to the trail and conducted a search, during which he discovered Ernest’s unclothed and motionless body among bushes near a stream.
He subsequently alerted villagers. The matter was reported to the Police on Saturday. Investigators later visited the scene and found Ernest’s body beneath a shed, covered with a sheet.
An examination of the body revealed what appeared to be a puncture wound below the left breast and another to the back. Abrasions were also observed on the back and left leg. Ernest’s body is awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Her reputed husband remains in Police custody and is assisting with the investigation.
