Farmer pinned to death by tractor at Canje

The lifeless and muddied body of a pensioner was on Tuesday afternoon found pinned under a tractor at a ranch in New Forest, East Canje, Berbice.

The dead man has been identified as 64-year-old Hackim Khan of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice.

Based on reports received, the man’s body was discovered at about 14:30h on Tuesday by persons who were traversing the area.

While information about the unfortunate incident was not forthcoming, Guyana Times was told the man left his home at about 08:00h to visit a friend’s farm to check on the workers. The farm, this publication understands, is located some distance from the main road.

When contacted, Police Commander of B Division (Berbice), Ian Amsterdam told this newspaper that based on initial investigations, the man was reportedly ploughing in the rice field aback Canje when the tractor toppled and pinned him in the process.

The Commander added that the Police will continue their investigations to determine whether or not any foul play was involved but as it is presently, the matter is being treated as an accident. A post-mortem is expected to be performed on the man’s body on Friday.

Attempts to contact the dead man’s relatives proved futile.
