Father charged for killing daughter

A construction worker, who allegedly killed his 11-year-old was on Friday remanded to prison on a murder charge.

Ganesh Ramdain of Lot 14 Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittelhozer at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.
The 33-year-old man was not required to plead to the offence of murder, which stated that between March 25 and March 27, 2020, at his home, he murdered his daughter Varshanie Ramdain.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal David Goodridge told the court that on March 25, the victim was in her bedroom alone while her mother was in the lower flat of the family home.
It was further alleged that the man entered his daughter’s bedroom and began choking her and then reportedly tied her to the roof and went downstairs.
Goodridge further stated that Ramdain then raised an alarm and her father went back into the room and cut her down from the roof.
The child was then rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was admitted as a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in an unconscious state.
However, the child succumbed to her injuries on March 27.
According to the prosecution’s case, during a video interview with the police, the father confessed to killing his daughter.
Magistrate Mittelhozer ordered that the accused undergo a psychological elevation while on remand. The case will continue on May 11.
