Feeble batting ends Jaguars’ Super50 campaign

Guyana Jaguars reached the semi-finals after three years but could not progress after a meek showing with the bat against Windward Volcanoes which ended their 2018 campaign in Cricket West Indies (CWI) Super50 Cup on Thursday evening at the Coolidge Cricket ground, Antigua.
Chasing 287 for victory Jaguars continuously found themselves in all sorts of trouble and crashed to a 52-run defeat vial DLS method which meant Volcanoes advanced to Saturday’s final against defending champions Barbados Pride.
Only nineteen year-old Sherfane Rutherford showed any guts and application for a top score of 49 (4x4s; 1×6) in which himself and Veersammy Permaul staged 71-run partnership in the late hour.

Windward Volcanoes surged to a 52- run victory over Guyana Jaguars to book a spot in Saturday’s final against Barbados Pride

Proceedings began well as Chandrapaul Hemraj started played a crunching cut forward of point in the first over but next ball he was not so fortunate producing a thick edge; Tagenarine Chanderpaul also showed urgency with some audacious drives. It came to end when his father Shivnarine Chanderpaul straight-drive Ryan John who managed to get a thin deflection.
Shivnarine showed some vintage signs smashing 18 runs off a John over which led to Jaguars reaching 50 in just seven overs but he too soon departed as did captain Leon Johnson and they slumped to 63-4.
Anthony Bramble made a quick-fire 27 (3x6s) but gifted his wicket away while Christopher Barnwell’s resistance came to an end in another clatter of wickets which signalled the culmination of the abysmal batting performance.
Earlier, Volcanoes began steadily Devon Smith along with another Windies discard, Kirk Edwards took the total pass the 50 mark in the ninth until the 36 year-old became adventurous, advancing to pacer Paul Wintz only to top-edge for Shivnarine to take a diving catch at mid-off.
Tyrone Theophile was in imperious form especially against Permaul whom he hit for some towering sixes and reached his half-century from just 56 balls after being dropped by Romario Shepherd early in his innings.
Off-spinner Ramaal Lewis retuned to the attack and got Edwards and they were 126-3 at the halfway stage.
Kavem Hodge played a brisk knock in the innings defining partnership with Theopile as they added 107 in 17.3 overs which saw Volcanoes reach 201-3 in 37 overs.
After Theophile reached his maiden List A ton inclusive of nine fours and four sixes, Hodge was followed after reaching his landmark from 58 balls which was inclusive of four balls reaching the ropes.
Those two quick wickets quelled the late surge attempted and brought Jaguars back into contest as Lewis chipped away from one end and the seamers bowling well at the ‘death’.
