FIFA scheme strengthens Guyana’s youth football pathway

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is building a more structured pathway for the country’s promising young players through the FIFA Talent Development Scheme, which combines year-round training, national scouting and specialised coaching.

The FIFA Talent Development Scheme brings together leading boys and girls from across Guyana for regular high-performance sessions under the supervision of the GFF’s National Coaches Pool30

The programme, launched in April, brings together leading boys and girls from across Guyana for regular high-performance sessions under the supervision of the GFF’s National Coaches Pool.
Players receive between six and eight hours of training each week, with attention placed on technical skills, tactical understanding, physical conditioning and personal development.
The scheme currently has a core group of approximately 24 players, while the wider training pool consists of about 30 footballers.
Although most of the participants come from coastal communities, the programme also provides opportunities for players from the hinterland and other parts of Guyana to be identified and added to the national development system.
The initiative forms part of FIFA’s wider global strategy to ensure talented players have access to organised and sustainable development programmes. FIFA provides technical guidance, funding, resources and continued monitoring to assist member associations.
Eight youth coaches make up the GFF’s National Coaches Pool and are responsible for delivering a consistent development curriculum to the players.
Their work is supported by the GFF Youth Ensemble Programme, which has expanded scouting and talent identification across the country’s regional associations.
The progress made since the programme began will be tested when Guyana compete in the Caribbean Football Union Under-14 Challenge Series in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, next month.
Guyana will play in Tier II, Group C and will begin its campaign against Montserrat on August 16. The national side will then face Anguilla on August 17 and The Bahamas on August 19.
The tournament will provide the young players with international exposure while allowing the coaching staff to assess their development against regional opposition.
According to the Federation, the lessons gained from the competition will be used to further improve the Talent Development Scheme and prepare future national players for regional and international football.
