Fire contained at Westminster Secondary School canteen

The Education Ministry has confirmed that a small fire occurred earlier this evening at the Westminster Secondary School, West Bank Demerara, following adverse weather conditions affecting parts of the country.
According to the Ministry, power fluctuations linked to the ongoing weather system caused a freezer in the school’s canteen to spark, resulting in the fire.
Officers from the Parfaite Harmonie Police Station responded and used two fire extinguisher balls previously supplied by the Guyana Fire Service to extinguish the flames. The fire was quickly brought under control.
The ministry confirmed that there were no injuries and no structural damage to the school building.
The Guyana Fire Service responded to the incident, conducting a full sweep of the premises to ensure the area was safe.
The Education Ministry said it continues to monitor the situation nationwide as reports of weather-related disruptions are received. It added that it is working closely with regional authorities, school administrators, emergency services, and utility providers to ensure the safety of students and staff.
