A fire of unknown origin on Wednesday morning destroyed a house at Heatburn Village, East Bank Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), leaving investigators trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
Two fire tenders from the New Amsterdam Fire Station responded to the scene, but despite efforts by firefighters, the building and its contents were completely destroyed.
Residents said the house was occupied by a woman originally from Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), and her two children.
However, persons in the community explained that the woman was not at home at the time of the fire and that her absence did not initially raise concern since she would often leave the area for days before returning.
According to residents, she had reportedly left the community several days earlier.
Investigations into Wednesday’s fire are continuing.
