Fire destroys interior of N/A house

An early morning fire severely damaged the interior of a house occupied by a single mother and her three children at Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam, on Friday.
The fire was reported shortly before 10:00h.
The fire reportedly started at about 10:00h but at the time, the occupants – Jenny Sulker and her children – were not at home.
The self-employed woman said she was alerted of the fire and by the time she arrived at the scene, firefighters were battling the blaze.
According to the 40-year-old woman, she was told that the initial fire was seen in the kitchen area of the two-bedroom concrete one-flat building.

The occupants at the house after the fire

“When ah come they were putting out the fire and I asked, ‘how the fire start?’, and they told me maybe it is electricity.”
She added that it was surprising that the fire started in the kitchen area. “When I finish cooking in the morning, I would always turn off the gas stove. When I left everything was off.”
Sulker, who operates a small retail business from her home, estimates her losses to be in excess of $1 million. she explained that she had $150,000 in cash at home, which she had collected from IPED to invest in her business.
“My daughter works at the bank and if she carried the money to put in the bank then she would have to answer questions as to where she got the money from, so that is why I had the money at home,” she said.
The house was built seven years ago. Sulker is, however, seeking the public’s assistance. She can be contacted at telephone number 692-8384.
