Flamboyance displayed at Region 10 Children’s Float Parade

The spotlight was on nursery and primary schools across Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) on Friday, with the hosting of the annual Children’s Costume and Float Parade in Linden, in keeping with Mashramani celebrations.

decked out in colourful and creative costumes, reflective of the spirit of Mashramani, as they gyrated to the sounds of music. The procession of nursery and primary school students as well as numerous teachers, moved off from the Five Corner area in Mackenzie, along Republic Avenue, thence to Greenheart Street, where the activities culminated at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground. A total of 13 nursery schools across the region participated in this year’s activity, inclusive of the Coomacka Nursery, which presented a flamboyant display entitled “Fairies Invasion”; Children’s Garden Nursery with “Arrowhead Revellers” and Republic Avenue Nursery with “Tropical Fusion”, among others.

A few other schools which participated in the primary category include Watooka Day Primary, with a costume entitled “Green Economy”; Wismar Hill Primary with “Celebrating with Unity”; Coomacka Primary with “Celebrating in Unity”; the One Mile Primary with “Rivoe Colistica; and the Amelia’s Ward Primary with “Unity”. the Children’s Road March in Georgetown last Saturday.

Scores of onlookers lined the streets of Mackenzie to get a glimpse of the spectacle, as the revellers put on quite a show. The competition got underway at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, where the costumes were judged according to display. In the Nursery Category, South Amelia’s Ward Nursery won first place with their costume entitled “For a Greener Guyana, Save our Trees”. This was followed by Retrieve Nursery in second place, with their angelic display entitled “Angels in Unity”; while the One Mile and Blueberry Hill Nursery Schools tied with third place. Meanwhile, Wisroc Nursery copped the Best Banner prize. The banner was entitled “Working Together For Progress, Together We Strive For Excellence”.

In the Primary Category, Watooka Day Primary school copped first place, followed by Regma Primary in the second spot and Coomacka Primary in third. One Mile Primary secured the prize for Best Banner. The successful schools were each awarded trophies. Prizes were also awarded for punctuality. This year’s Mashramani celebrations are being held under the theme “Celebrate with Liberty, Dignity and Greater Unity”.
