The Flying Ace Cycling race that was originally set to pedal off on March 6 has been shifted to March 20 for various reasons. The race will be held around the town of New Amsterdam.
This circuit race is open to cyclists from Regions Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). Cyclists will assemble in front of the Rainbow Beer Garden on Republic Road and Charles Place, and the race will pedal towards Coburg Street, into Main Street, and through Stanleytown to the Tacama Turn at Republic Road, for a total of 10 laps.
Prizes will be awarded to the first four finishers in the senior category, the first three veterans and the top junior. Eight sprint prizes will be up for grabs.
Flying Ace Cycling Club President Randolph Roberts said other big events would be held in Berbice, and those events would be open to cyclists countrywide.
“I would not invite cyclists from Georgetown and give them $15,000 first prize. Cycling is very expensive; a tyre is more than $25,000. So, you have to give cyclists proper packages. For me, as the President of Flying Ace Cycling Club, I want the best for cyclists. I am looking … to business people to continue supporting Flying Ace, and I would like to thank those who are on board,” Roberts said.
This race is in collaboration with the Mashramani celebrations in New Amsterdam, while the Arokium Funeral Home, Derick Funeral Home, Dexter Funeral Home, and Suresh Business Complex, among other sponsors, have come on board. According to Roberts, this race was given the green-light by the COVID-19 Task Force.
