Improved health care for Region 5

Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) health authorities have commissioned a fully functional ultrasound unit at the Fort Wellington Hospital as the administration seeks to optimise health care delivery in the Region.
According to Regional Health Officer (RHO), Dr Steven Cheefoon, patients can now access ultrasound services at both the Mahaicony and Fort Wellington Hospitals.

Speaking at the recent commissioning ceremony, the RHO said authorities were currently seeking to obtain the services of a psychiatrist to address mental health issues within the Region. The initial plan, he says, is to have the specialist visit the Region weekly.
Meanwhile, Dr Cheefoon is also assuring the general public that there was an adequate supply of essential as well as non-essential drugs within the Region. He noted that systems were being put in place, which will allow the regional health department to be able to source drugs without undue delays, as was the case in the past.
Apart from the ultrasound unit, the RHO noted that the laboratory facilities at Fort Wellington Hospital were about to be upgraded to be the best Guyana has ever seen.
The authorities also plan to set up a modern laboratory facility which will be used as a model for laboratories around the country.
Dr Cheefoon said that among other objectives, the authorities are striving for equity in the delivery of healthcare services within Region Five, with the aid of 17 Health Centres and the two regional hospitals. He reiterated that the Regional Health Authority, with support from the Health Ministry and the Regional Administration, will continue to strive to have acceptable healthcare made accessible to all residents of the Region.
