Ganja row leads to chopping

A 47-year-old labourer was severely chopped by three cutlass-wielding men on Wednesday after he was accused of stealing a quantity of marijuana. The incident took place around 20:45h, at Co-op Crescent Mackenzie, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
Enquiries disclosed that the labourer works around the Mackenzie Market, where he helps business owners clean up their stalls after closing daily. On Wednesday, he was in the market working when a man approached him and accused him of stealing his marijuana last Saturday.
The victim said as he walked away to empty garbage, three males then ran up to him brandishing cutlasses. They then began firing several chops at him. As he ran to seek refuge in a nearby shop, they made good their escape on foot.
The injured man was taken to the Mackenzie Hospital Complex with a gaping wound to his forehead and lacerations to his left hand. He also sustained a fractured skull. The 47-year-old man, whose condition is listed as serious, was transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday.
Police said that efforts to arrest the suspects have so far proven futile. Investigations are continuing.
