The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) is currently seeking to put together its next generation of national players, so that they might participate in a youth development programme organised by Nike and FIBA in July 2019.
The best five (5) under-17 players will be selected on a number of basketball parameters set out by the governing body, to ensure a high level of athletes attend the development programme.
These tryouts will be conducted in Puerto Rico in July 2019 against a number of other countries, with a final selection to be picked for the Basketball World Cup in China 2019.
The Guyana national selection short-list for this youth development programme is set for April 27 & 28, 2019 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 0900hrs. The Federation has selected 35 players, 15 of whom were selected from Youth Basketball Guyana.
According to a release, the Federation plans to keep the next generation of Guyana national basketballers together as a unit, as other international engagements are on the horizon in the near future, such as Centro Basketball and CBC U17 Championships, slated for 2020.
The GBF is currently collaborating with two overseas coaches, Rich Mahler and ex-NBA player Jermaine Taylor, who previous played for the Houston Rockets, for selection of the elite 5 players to represent Guyana.
