GCB reward cricketers for outstanding achievements

– Hetmyer, Campbell cop highest individual awards

Shimron Hetmyer headlined the 2017 Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Awards Ceremony, copping the coveted Male Cricketer-of-the-year award while West Indies star all-rounder Shemaine Campbell was deemed Female Cricketer of-the-year.
The ceremony which was staged at the Umana Yana on Wednesday evening saw the newest West Indies player Hetmyer, being rewarded for his strides from a Guyana Jaguars player to a West Indies Test batsman. Campbell who is no stranger to the award, continued to shine internationally with the senior women’s team and remains arguably Guyana’s best female cricketer.
Minister of Social Cohesion, with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. George Norton who delivered one of the feature remarks, said the Ministry is playing is currently on a drive to restore venues while ensuring that other gear and playing equipment are distributed. Norton hailed the awardees as well as the GCB for keeping cricket alive locally and regionally.

Among the other top awardees were defending regional 4-day three time champs Guyana Jaguars senior team, who are inches from winning another title. The team received individual awards in the form of perfectly crafted plaques made from purple-heart wood.
Coaches Esuan Crandon and Rayon Griffith were given awards for their outstanding works in coaching while other players like Sheldon Charles who swept numerous U15 regional awards including MVP, Kevlon Anderson who bagged a few awards in the U17 level.
Joshua Persaud, Sachin Singh, Ashmead Nedd, Bhaskar Yadram and Raymon Perez who were all selected to the West Indies U19 team, were also showered with awards for their incredible year. The GCB also recognized numerous other entities including clubs, coaches, physiotherapists, journalists and companies who were onboard as sponsors; were all exalted by the board.
Miscellaneous Awards: Shabeka Gajnabi (Most Promising Female Cricketer of the Year), Keemo Paul (Most Promising Male Cricketer of the Year), Bhaskar Yadram (Junior Cricketer of the Year), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Senior Regional Cricketer of the Year), Sheldon Charles (Most runs, wickets and Most Valuable Player in the Regional Under 15 Tournament), Sachin Singh (Most runs in the Regional Under-17 Tournament), Kelvon Anderson (Most wickets and Most Valuable Player in the Regional Under 17 Tournament), Raymond Perez (Most runs and Most Valuable Player in the Regional Under 19 Tournament), Ashmead Nedd Most wickets in the Regional Under 19 Tournament).
Special Service Awards: Bharrat Sookdeo, Tuschen Sports Club, Rayon Griffith, Esaun Crandon, Rajiv Bisnauth, Grantley Culbard and Daniel Richmond (Posthumously).
Special Recognition Awards: Shimron Hetymer, Raymond Reifer, Joshua Persaud, Bhaskar Yadram, Ronaldo Alimohamed, Ashmead Nedd and Raymond Perez.
Corporate awards:Hand-in-Hand Group of Companied, Scotiabank, Dave West Indian Exports, Sterling Products Limited and Demerara Mutual Group of Companies. The Club of the Year award was won by the Albion Sports Club. Team awards: the Guyana Jaguars, Guyana Male Under-19 team and the National Female Under-19 team.
