The Guyana Hockey Board (GHB)’s Diamond Jubilee Independence Competition got underway on Thursday evening at the National Stadium, Providence, with Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Elite and Old Fort Top Form securing victories in the opening matches of the tournament.
GCC Elite produced a dominant display in the women’s division, defeating Hikers 10-0 after establishing a commanding 5-0 lead at halftime.
Gabriella Xavier led the scoring with a hat-trick, while Vanessa Pires added a brace. Alana Chung, Rebecca Ferreira, Abosaide Cadogan, Amariah Shadeo and Kirsten Gomes also found the back of the net as GCC Elite controlled proceedings from start to finish.

The men’s encounter was a more competitive affair, with Old Fort Top Form overcoming Saints 4-2.
Jason DeSantos opened the scoring for Old Fort Top Form before Omar Hopkinson and Yonnick Norton added field goals to extend their advantage. Theodore Ariens also contributed to the winning effort.
Saints responded through Troy Hodge and Javid Hussain but were unable to erase the deficit as Old Fort Top Form held on for the victory.
The Diamond Jubilee Independence Competition continues this weekend at the National Stadium, Providence, with teams looking to strengthen their positions ahead of the knockout stages.
The tournament is scheduled to conclude on Monday, June 15, when the championship matches will be contested.
