The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has confirmed that one of its vessels involved in an accident in the Barima River, Region One (Barima–Waini), on Sunday, was being operated without authorisation and was not engaged in official duties at the time.
According to the Commission, preliminary internal investigations revealed that the vessel was being used outside of its approved scope when the incident occurred. GECOM is currently assisting the Guyana Police Force (GPF) with ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The Captain of the vessel, who is employed by GECOM, is in Police custody and is cooperating with authorities.
Reports indicate that the vessel collided with a sandbank near Morawhanna, resulting in several persons on board sustaining injuries. GECOM clarified that none of the passengers were employees of or affiliated with the Commission.
The injured individuals were rescued by the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, which responded to the incident. The vessel was later destroyed by a fire of unknown origin.
GECOM expressed appreciation to the Coast Guard for its response, noting that their actions ensured the safety of those on board and helped prevent more serious injury or loss of life.
The Commission also extended wishes for a full recovery to those injured.
GECOM also stated that it will continue to cooperate fully with the GPF as investigations proceed and will await the outcome before determining further action.
