President Dr Irfaan Ali on Wednesday accepted the Letters of Credence from the newly appointed British High Commissioner to Guyana, Joseph Guy Fisher, at the Office of the President.
In a statement shared on his social media page, the head of state said discussions following the accreditation ceremony focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Guyana and the United Kingdom. Key areas identified for collaboration include healthcare, education, security, climate change, biodiversity, environmental services, tourism and infrastructure.

Fisher’s appointment was previously announced by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in March 2026. He assumed duties in April, succeeding Jane Miller, who concluded her tenure in January after serving since July 2021.
In addition to his role in Guyana, Fisher will also serve as non-resident ambassador to Suriname and as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
According to the FCDO, Fisher brings extensive diplomatic and national security experience to the position. He most recently served as private secretary to the United Kingdom’s national security adviser at Number 10 between 2024 and 2025. Prior to that, he completed the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Defence Academy in 2024.
Between 2022 and 2024, he held the post of deputy principal private secretary to the foreign secretary within the FCDO. His earlier roles include service in the Cabinet Office’s National Security Secretariat, where he advanced from Team Leader to Deputy Head of Department from 2020 to 2022.
Fisher also has overseas experience, including a posting in Yangon, where he served as acting deputy head of mission in 2020 and earlier as second secretary responsible for political and press matters from 2011 to 2014. From 2014 to 2017, he worked as an international development liaison officer in the office of Aung San Suu Kyi.
Earlier in his career, he served in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province as a second secretary with a provincial reconstruction team and held roles within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s EU Directorate, Information Technology Department, and the joint FCO-DFID Sudan Unit. Fisher joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2007.
