GFF strengthens development of young referees

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) continued its efforts to develop the country’s next generation of match officials with a national referee training session last Saturday, August 8.
The programme brought together emerging referees from across Guyana for physical, technical, and classroom training aimed at improving their knowledge and application of the Laws of the Game.
Organised by the GFF Refereeing Department, the session also allowed young officials to share experiences and build greater confidence and consistency in their decision-making.

Several participants had officiated during the regional stages of the GFF Youth Ensemble Programme. Their inclusion helped to connect the practical experience gained during competitive matches with further technical education.
Training began at 06:00h with an on-field session, conducted by instructors Colin Bowry and Anthony Adams. The practical exercises focused on physical preparation and the correct application of refereeing principles during match situations.
The classroom segment included a video analysis assessment using randomly selected football scenarios from the FIFA Referee Education & Development (FIFA RED) platform. The young officials were required to interpret the incidents, make decisions, and explain how the Laws of the Game should be applied.
Discussions also covered challenges, offside decisions and other match situations, with instructors placing emphasis on improving consistency and confidence.
The Refereeing Department also received feedback from the participants, particularly those who worked during the Youth Ensemble competition. Their comments provided useful information about their experiences and development in competitive matches.
The session formed part of the GFF’s wider commitment to developing referees alongside players and coaches while creating a clear pathway for talented officials.
Through continued education, practical experience and exposure to competitions, the federation hopes to prepare more Guyanese referees to advance through the national, Caribbean, Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), and FIFA levels.
